Telecommuting or working from home or e-commuting is an arrangement whereby you work either from home or from a location near your home such as a library or coffee shop. While e-commuting, you communicate with your employees via telephone or emails. Additionally, when telecommuting, you only go to the office to attend a meeting or you go there when there is a specific task that requires your physical presence. However, with the availability of video conferencing, it might not be necessary that you should go to the office to attend meetings.

Bad Tourism Merchandising

In travelling to a function recently, I experienced a not-so- joyous taxi cab ride through an inner city area.

The cab itself had set the mood because it was dirty, smelly and in a very poor state of repair.  Pieces were falling off the seat, the speaker from the radio was hanging out of the bottom of the dashboard and so on.

Are They Motivated To Manage?

Many years ago I conducted an exercise with seventeen managers and gave them a special test that I used to assess how motivated they were towards a management career as opposed to continuing to specialise in operations.
Significantly, the seventeen people on this course were already managers and this was a special management development program oriented towards strategic planning.  I had been asked to do some revision on the general principles of management and management commitment as an introduction to the main theme of the conference, which was strategic planning and budgets.

Legislation has been introduced to prevent discrimination in employment on a range of characteristics.  One of the most significant of these is age.
The aim of the legislation is to prevent decisions being made in employment matters on grounds that are irrelevant to the likely work performance of the individual.

Many organisations have been putting together fairly complex and expensive promotional material, but failing to achieve their goals. 

Several reasons why became abundantly clear to me recently after receiving a follow up call to a promotional newsletter from a marketing organisation.

Baseball Bat Management

With all the advances in human resource management and constant discussion about new techniques, one does not expect to hear stories about large companies treating their employees poorly.
No matter how often I am surprised by these stories, I am still disappointed when I hear about companies that are household names allowing their managers to treat employees of long standing in a manner that is just totally inconsistent with the image that they present.

A colleague, whom I had not seen for many years, was speaking about the difficulty of changing careers when a fair degree of progress had already been made in one area.  This is not an uncommon dilemma.
